Vida Skerk is a
screenwriter and director based between London and Zagreb.
Her films blend eerie surrealism with emotional depth, often exploring themes of identity, belonging,
and connection.
The short film „Left Behind, Still Standing“, which she directed and co-wrote, will premiere this year
in the La Cinef official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks her
second consecutive selection in La Cinef following
“Ether” (2025).
She is a recent graduate of the Directing Fiction MFA at the
National Film and Television School, where both films were made.
The selection of “Ether” marked the first time in the history of the NFTS that a film made by first-year students was selected for La Cinef.
She is the
first director in the school’s history to be selected twice for La Cinef at
Cannes.
Prior to the NFTS, she wrote and directed “Night Ride”
(“Noćna vožnja”, Croatia, 2022), which screened at BFI Flare in London and at the Premiers
Plans Film Festival in Angers, where it received the Student Jury Award. It
also won the Oktavijan Award for Best Short Film from the Croatian Film Critics
Association.
Born and raised in Trieste, she is Slovenian, Croatian, and
Italian. This identity brings a unique perspective to her work, placing her at
the crossroads of multiple worlds, both as an insider and an outsider in each.
